Umbria, the green heart of Italy

Perugia

In the province of Perugia you can breathe an air of other times, among the lanes of medieval villages, among the palaces, castles and fortresses of enchanting villages. Located in the center of Italy, this province is the largest in Umbria and occupies two thirds of the regional territory. There are many landscapes that come across: a vast expanse of plains in the Umbrian Valley and in the Tiber Valley, with hills as a backdrop and mountains in the eastern part. The remaining territory is covered by woods. In this panorama immersed in a kaleidoscope of intense colours, the villages rise, on the top of the hills to dominate the plain below, with the precious heritage of history and art that characterizes them. And then Lake Trasimeno, the largest in central Italy, with its three islands inside, Polvese, Maggiore and Minore and two headlands.

In particular, the Basilica of San Francesco represents a set of masterpieces of human creative genius and is an extraordinary example of a type of architectural complex that has significantly influenced the development of art and architecture. In addition to being the city of the Saints, Saint Francis and Saint Clare, and a symbol of their messages of peace, Assisi is a very welcoming place and best expresses the hospitable soul of Italians. Furthermore, the entire surrounding area up to Perugia offers an infinite series of naturalistic, historical and food and wine attractions.

Spoleto

Spoleto is among the most fascinating cities of art in Umbria. More than 2000 years of art and culture and international events make it a place of unique beauty. It extends over the Sant'Elia hill, at the foot of the sacred forest of Monteluco. Extraordinarily rich in art from every era and protagonist of prestigious events, such as the Festival dei Due Mondi. Spoleto is among the symbolic cities of international culture. The "sacred forest" of Monteluco is of great naturalistic and spiritual interest, with dense evergreen holm oak vegetation. Not to forget Villa Redenta, which stands on the remains of an ancient Roman villa, with a beautiful park where there are centuries-old trees: cedars of Lebanon, holm oaks and magnolias among which the Spoleto nobility strolled between the 17th and 19th centuries.

Spello

The Umbrians, who according to many scholars founded Spello, were replaced by the Romans: elevated to a municipality in 90 BC. it was refounded with the title of Colonia Julia Hispellum at the beginning of the reign of Augustus; The definitive structuring of the urban layout dates back to this phase. Spello combines its medieval character, with winding alleys and ancient stone houses, numerous testimonies from the Roman era, such as the city walls, along whose route the doors still well preserved opened, the remains of the theatre, the amphitheater and the baths . The town is still surrounded by walls, erected in 1360 incorporating part of the Roman wall and three splendid gates: Porta Consolare (1st century BC), Porta Urbica (or Porta San Ventura) and Porta Venere from the Augustan age, built in Foggia of triumphal arch, with the two so-called Propertius towers on the sides with a twelve-sided plan.

Gubbio is among the oldest cities in Umbria, wonderfully preserved over the centuries and rich in monuments that testify to its glorious past.
